NY Times Article describes "Surge in Free School Lunches Reflects Economic Crisis"

An additional three million children are receiving free school lunch for the first time, a seventeen percent increase to 21 million last year from 18 million in 2006-2007 according to USDA data.

The article in the NY Times that analyzed the data highlights the increase and its association with the economic downturn, increase in unemployment and job losses in the middle class resulting in increase numbers of families in need.
