Tianna Gaines-Turner and Joanna Cruz Simmons, members of Witnesses to Hunger in Philadelphia, collaborated with Mariana Chilton, PhD, Center for Hunger-Free Communities Director, to publish an article on SNAP from the perspective of participants in the program. “Recommendations From SNAP Participants to Improve Wages and End Stigma” was published in the American Journal of Public Health on Oct. 17.

The authors rely on first-hand experience with poverty and SNAP to present a series of policy recommendations including changes to SNAP, universal basic income, and higher wages. The article builds on prior work by Turner and Simmons. Turner co-authored a paper on qualitative research methods in public health and Simmons co-authored a paper on major drivers of food insecurity
