"I had my three children to have someone to love me."

Melissa is thirty and the mother of three children. When Melissa first joined Witnesses to Hunger in 2008, her oldest son was receiving SSI for multiple disorders, including Failure to Thrive, a clinical diagnosis that can be related to food insecurity. She had been cut off of food stamps, cash assistance and medical insurance due to a paperwork error at the Welfare office, and so was struggling to feed her children and had to borrow money from friends. Melissa has survived a difficult childhood, and is raising her three children on her own without financial support from their fathers.
